School’s back in for the year, and now is the time to clean up your social media accounts. Yes, the rush of a new school year might have you facing a full plate, but before you know it, it’ll be December and nothing will have happened. Now that everything is relatively new it’s a great time to dust off and punch up your social media marketing strategy.

When it comes to social media management, it’s easy to get carried away. Signing up for new accounts, maintaining a presence and then losing interest is a fate we all fall victim to. However, mismanaged social channels are a huge liability that can hurt your institution’s online reputation.

It doesn’t matter how big or small your school is; social media clean-up is a crucial part of ensuring that there is a clear line of communication between you and your potential and existing students. Yet, with too many mismanaged accounts it’s easy for you to lose focus on the voice behind your account.

Audit Your Accounts

Cleaning up your social media channels begins with an audit. Take a good look at all the channels on which you currently have a presence. Ask yourself if these are the best channels to interact with your audience. Making sure you’re focusing on the right channels is huge; there is no point in wasting time targeting channels that won’t reach your ideal market.

Examine what other institutions are doing and what social streams they are accessing or neglecting and then tap into the right markets. Delete old accounts, and close accounts on social channels that aren’t providing you with a way to connect with your current and potential student audience.

Monitor Employee Permissions

It’s always good to monitor who has access to your corporate social media accounts. As employees take on new roles within your school or move on and take new jobs, it’s important to ensure that only the people who should have access to your accounts do. This may mean removing Facebook permissions or changing account passwords when necessary.

Get a Makeover

If it’s been a while since you last updated your school’s profile or background photo, there is no time like the present to refresh your online image. Maybe you’ve redesigned your logo and haven’t had the chance to update it across your social media channels, or you just want to spruce up the look of your profile with photos that will appeal to your target audience.  Always incorporate an element of the creative into your social profiles. One way to take a step in the right direction is to include a background or cover photo that has a creative appeal. Also, update the ‘about’ section of your profile and make sure it includes all of the most current information your school needs to present to potential enrollees.

Declutter

Take a moment to review past content that you’ve posted and delete any duplicate posts, whether they are photos or otherwise. Also, take some time to review accounts you’re following and remove any spam or inactive accounts from the list.
