Whether you are an avid player or not, chances are you have heard about the new game app Pokémon Go. The Niantic designed game has been breaking records everywhere including the fastest mobile game to hit 10 million worldwide downloads in just 7 days.

While it has found fans across the world, there are some people with strong opinions against it. Opinions aside, even if you are not a Pokémon Trainer you can still gain benefits and potentially make a profit from this game.

The question is, what can marketers and businesses learn from this game going viral?

  1. Timing is everything. Nintendo was smart about when they released the app. Because this app includes walking, launching it during the beginning of Summer was ideal. If they had launched this app in the middle of winter, chances are the number of users would be decreased immensely. This shows that you need to consider all factors when releasing or launching any product whether it be an app or something a little more practical!

2. Dumb it down. While you may understand a lot about what you are selling, the consumers may not. In this case, you need to make sure it is as simple as can be. For example, Pokémon Go has a low learning curve, making it easy for almost anyone to pick up the game and get a good understanding of how to use it. This is a contributing factor on why the app has been so successful.

3. Participate in what everyone is talking about. Regardless of whether you are interested  in Pokémon Go, this game is something that millions of people are talking about and if done properly, your business can benefit from it. If your business is lucky enough to be within reach of a “Pokéstop” or a Pokémon Go “Gym”, you have an advantage.

Many businesses are offering discounts for players who catch Pokémon in their establishment. Giving a 10% discount on coffee or other purchases is a great incentive for players who would be playing the game anyway. Furthermore, this can help businesses attract new and loyal customers.

No matter what you choose to do, you are grabbing the attention of many. If you are not a business near a stop, you can still benefit from this by bringing your business to them. This would be a great spot to market your business or product by handing out business cards, handing out samples, setting up a stand – the list is endless.

As a marketer, you have two choices: you can either look at this as just a new app release, or you can look at it as a marketing opportunity for your business. With as many benefits as are available, you would be remised to ignore this current frenzy!
